Present Perfect with "for" and "since" for Long-Term Habits
Subject + have/has + past participle + for/since + time expression
We use the present perfect with for and since to talk about habits and situations that started in the past and continue until now.
🇪🇸 Usamos el presente perfecto con for y since para hablar de hábitos y situaciones que empezaron en el pasado y continúan hasta ahora.
• I have had this morning routine for three years.
🇪🇸 He tenido esta rutina de la mañana por tres años.
• She has worked from home since last summer.
🇪🇸 Ella ha trabajado desde casa desde el verano pasado.
Carlos has always been busy with work and evening classes, but this year he decided to change his habits. For a long time, he went to bed late and checked his phone for an hour before sleeping. As a result, he was often tired in the morning and arrived late to his first tasks. For the last two months, he has followed a new routine. He has gone to bed before eleven and has put his phone in another room. Since he started this habit, he has felt more focused during the day. He has also used a simple weekly schedule to plan his priorities. Instead of reacting to every message immediately, he has checked his email only three times a day. These small changes have helped him finish his work earlier and have more free time in the evening.
Which sentence correctly uses the present perfect with for or since?
- I have this habit for two years.
- I had this habit since two years.
- I have had this habit since last year.
- I have this habit since last year.
What do we use the present perfect with for and since to talk about?
- Only finished actions in the distant past
- Actions that started in the past and continue until now
- Plans in the future
- Imaginary situations

"script": "Welcome back to the Better Habits podcast. In today’s episode, we’re talking about time management at work and at home. Many listeners have sent messages about feeling busy all the time. Our guest, Laura, has coached people on time management for several years. She says that most people already know what they need to do, but they haven’t built strong habits yet. For example, some listeners have used to-do lists for months, but they haven’t reviewed them regularly. Others have checked their phones every few minutes and have lost focus. Laura suggests choosing one or two habits and keeping them for at least four weeks. She has seen big results when people have planned their day the night before and have avoided major distractions in the morning. According to her, good time management is not about doing more, but about doing the right things consistently."
